The Uhuru is a special purpose vehicle developed in
the UK by Riders for Health. The Unit uses a Yamaha Motor bike designed
for the Australian market and specially adapted with 12volt battery
charging and added fuel and water pumps for its service requirements
in Africa.
Our vehicle will be operated by the charity 'Action
In Africa' from its clinic in Tanzania. One community health nurse
will be able to serve a remote area half the size of Surrey by using
this vehicle. The nurse will be able to deliver Aids health Education
for the Elton John Foundation as well as much needed medicines and
vaccines.
The Uhuru costs £4630 this includes the motor bike,
sidecar, stretcher and special equipment, along with training of
the medical staff to service and repair the bike. This training
means that the fleet of 96 Uhurus have covered 10 million miles
without a single breakdown. although 5 have been shot at.
